Preparing in the Meantime with a Growth Mindset

Life doesn't always unfold according to our timeline. We apply for the job and wait. We launch the business and wait. We pursue a promotion, a new opportunity, a relationship, or a dream, and sometimes the answer isn't immediate. The "meantime"—the period between where we are and where we want to be—can feel frustrating, uncertain, and even discouraging.

However, the meantime is not wasted time.  It is often the most important season for growth, preparation, and transformation. The individuals who ultimately achieve their goals are not always the most talented or fortunate; they are often the ones who remain resilient and continue growing while they wait.


What Is Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to adapt, recover, and move forward in the face of challenges, setbacks, and uncertainty. It is not about avoiding difficulties. Instead, resilience is about developing the strength and confidence to navigate them.

Resilient individuals understand that setbacks are temporary. They recognize that obstacles are opportunities to learn, improve, and become better prepared for future success.


The Power of a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities, intelligence, and skills can be developed through effort, learning, and persistence.

People with a fixed mindset may think:

  • "I'm not good enough." 
  • "I  failed, so I should quit." 
  • "Things never work out for me." 

People with a growth mindset think:

  • "What can I learn from this experience?" 
  • "How can I improve?" 
  • "This challenge is helping me grow." 

Your mindset shapes your response to adversity. When you embrace a growth mindset, every challenge becomes a classroom and every setback becomes a stepping stone.


Preparing in the Meantime

While waiting for your next opportunity, focus on preparation rather than frustration. Ask yourself:

1. What Skills Can I Develop?

Use this season to strengthen your professional and personal capabilities. Consider:

  • Taking courses or certifications 
  • Reading books and industry publications 
  • Improving communication and leadership skills 
  • Learning new technology or tools 
  • Expanding your professional network 

Growth today creates opportunities tomorrow.

2. What Habits Need Improvement?

Success is often built through consistent daily habits. Evaluate your routines and identify areas for improvement.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I managing my time effectively? 
  • Am I prioritizing my health and wellness? 
  • Am I maintaining a positive attitude? 
  • Am I investing in personal development? 

Small improvements made consistently can produce significant results over time.

3. How Can I Strengthen My Character?

The meantime is an opportunity to develop qualities that support long-term success:

  • Patience      
  • Discipline      
  • Integrity      
  • Accountability      
  • Adaptability      
  • Emotional      intelligence 

Character often determines how well we sustain success once it arrives.


Turning Setbacks into Setups

Many successful individuals experienced rejection, delays, and disappointments before achieving their goals. What separated them from others was their decision to keep moving forward.

Rather than asking, "Why is this happening to me?" consider asking:

  • "What is this experience teaching me?" 
  • "How can I grow through this challenge?" 
  • "How can I use this season to prepare for what's next?" 

Sometimes what feels like a setback is actually preparation for a greater opportunity.

Practical Strategies for Building Resilience

Practice Self-Reflection

Take time to evaluate your experiences, lessons learned, and areas for growth. Journaling can be a powerful tool for increasing self-awareness.

Focus on What You Can Control

You may not control every outcome, but you can control your effort, attitude, preparation, and response.

Build a Strong Support System

Surround yourself with positive people who encourage growth, accountability, and perseverance.

Celebrate Progress

Don't wait until you achieve the final goal to recognize success. Celebrate small wins and milestones along the way.

Stay Committed to Continuous Learning

Growth is a lifelong journey. Commit to becoming a better version of yourself every day.

The meantime is not a holding pattern—it is a preparation period.
